Yin Yang combines the benefits of passive stretching and gentle Qi-stimulating movements with dynamic, strengthening exercises and postures.
Yin and Yang are opposing but complementary energies that create balance and harmony in the universe, according to Daoist philosophy. They are relative terms, and through an exercise lens, Yin is more cooling, static, and downward, with an inward focus, whereas Yang is more warming, dynamic, and upward, with an external focus. Yin Yoga aims to stimulate the flow of Qi and release tension by stressing the Yin tissues (connective tissues, joints, fascia) in a slow-paced, passive way, whereas Yang styles of yoga stress the Yang tissues (muscles, blood) through rhythmic, repetitive movements to build strength and endurance. We need to stress all tissues to maintain or regain health.
In this class we explore stillness and movement as a way to balance Yin and Yang energies within the body, with a specific focus on poses/movements that mobilize the spine and functional core exercises that strengthen and support the spine. The class ends in Savasana for an integrated mental-physical-emotional practice.
